What is Daruma no Gakko?

Daruma no Gakko is a 501(c)(3) non-profit parent cooperative which offers a four-week Japanese cultural education program in the summer for K-6 students. Its mission is to develop and maintain an educational program which fosters an appreciation of Japanese American culture.

Can you describe the curriculum?

The goal of the program is to help build strong positive self-images and identities through learning and engaging in the study of Japanese and Japanese American history, literature, language, music, art, food, field trips and community activities.

What are the hours?

Four weeks in early summer, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to noon. Other activities are include Sports Day (Undokai) generally held the first Saturday after the session begins and an end-of-the-year program (Gakugeikai) the Friday evening following the last day of school.

What is the cost of the program?

The cost for the four weeks is $ 300.

When do I apply?

Registration will be available online only. The link to the online registration site can be found here on our website. Please contact us if you have any questions. The application process generally begins in mid-January with enrollment continuing until each class is filled, on a first come first serve basis.

Who can apply?

The program is open to children who will be entering Kindergarten through 6th grade. All ethnicities are welcome.

How much Japanese should my child be able to speak before enrolling?

None. The classes are taught in English. We have a language teacher who spends 15 minutes a day with each class.

What size are the classes?

Kindergarten is limited to 12 students. Other classes are generally 12-20 students, although there have been occasional exceptions. The total enrollment is approximately 100-110 students. Each teacher is assisted by two or three teen aides.

Can I enroll my child for just part of the session?

We encourage students to attend every day of the session. Tuition is not pro-rated.

Does a student need to attend all years of the program consecutively?

Although the program is designed to provide a broad base over the seven possible years of attendance, students may join the program at any time there is space; each grade works with standalone curriculum without prerequisites.

Do you have before and after care?

No, we do not currently offer this. Children may be dropped off as early as 8:45. Pickup is at noon.

Do the students eat lunch at school?

No, however a morning snack is served. We take into consideration reported allergies and serve only snacks that ALL students can eat.
